Facts

  • Domestic Abuse is actual OR threatened physical, sexual, emotional, psychological or financial abuse
  • It occurs regardless of gender, age, sexual orientation, race or religion, disability or economic well-being
  • In England and Wales:
    • 1 in 4 women (in Surrey this increases to 1 in 3) and 1 in 6 men will experience some form of Domestic abuse in their lifetime.
    • 2 women every week are killed by a current or former partner.
    • 750,000 children witness family abuse
    • 25% of 13-17 year olds who are dating experience physical violence, or verbal or sexual abuse

How you can help

 

  • Contact Your Sanctuary 24 confidential helpline 01483 776822 if you are being abused OR know someone you think is being abused
    • (Your Sanctuary Helpline covers the whole of Surrey and is the agency with outreach services in Surrey Heath, Runneymede and Woking and offers safe emergency accommodation to women and children who are unable to remain in their home) yoursanctuary.org.uk
  • Listening: Give time and space to talk / reassure them you believe them / take care not to blame
  • Acknowledging: This is a frightening situation / no one deserves to be threatened or abused / nothing justifies abusive behaviour
  • Supporting: Encourage them to express their feelings / try not to be judgemental / encourage them to seek help
  • Logging information: Advise recording of details of abuse (inc dates & times) / keep abusive text messages and write down answer phone messages /if the abuse is physical visit GP or hospital where injuries can be recorded
